What a year 2017 has been, I didn’t quite expect it to be so epic when I committed to the challenge of completing 10km a day every day for the whole year. Some may say I am mad, but for me, I have always looked to achieve crazy challenges, things like marathons, Ironmans, 6 day mountain bike races and swimming across the English Channel. It is what makes me tick!

I knew a lot was going to change for me in 2017, my husband was starting a course which would take up a lot of his time (training to become a commercial pilot with the charity ‘Wings for Warriors’), I was leaving my job and we were planning to move to Scotland! So, as 2017 rolled in I was wondering what I could do to challenge myself without the big commitment to compete or race at an event. I wanted a challenge I could do anywhere and with anyone!

10 km a day was Born!

So, what has it been like? As I sit here in front of a lovely log burner with a beer in hand after a long day on the bike, in freezing conditions I guess I could say amazing?! But then I think of the days I have had to drag myself to the gym to complete 10km on the rower, wattbike or treadmill, or the times I have had to put a headtorch on in the dark to run the 10km when it is nearing 11pm and I have had a mega busy day but I had to fit it in! Or there are the times I have visited friends and family and I have had to get up early to fit a 10km run in so I don’t ‘ruin’ the day by disappearing off! That aside, I listened to a podcast in Februrary and one of the hosts said, if something is important to you, you will make time. There are 24hrs in a day, instead of watching TV for an hour, go for a run, instead of lying in until 7:30 get up at 6am and get to the gym. It can be done! When you have a goal, you work hard to achieve it!

I have 17 days left as I write this! I would be lying if I said I wasn’t looking forward to New Years Eve! That prosecco will taste so sweet and I can look back on an achievement that not only makes me proud, has taught me life long lessons that I will never forget. It is amazing what you can achieve when you set your mind to it. Give it a go, 2018 is just around the corner, set yourself a challenge that scares you and then commit to it, make it a priority and I will raise a glass to you on New Years Eve 2018! Hey, if you come up with an awesome idea, maybe I will join you! I am still working on next year 😊

Cheers Challenge Chums!!!
